Job Description

Who we are:

Murray Harcourt is a respected, independent boutique firm of audit, tax, and financial advisory specialists with a passion for being a commercial, proactive and forward-thinking client resource.

With an impressive client list of dynamic owner-managed businesses and mid-sized corporates across the Yorkshire region, Murray Harcourt offers all the services one would expect from a full-service accountancy firm, but we do it a little differently.

Clients can turn to us for a quality, value-added audit, outsource their entire finance function to us, or they can draw on trusted tax, corporate finance, or other business advisory support whenever they need it. But whichever way clients choose to engage with us, they are always pleasantly surprised by the time we invest in them, our flexibility and accessibility, our transparency in fees and, importantly, our depth of commercial experience with organisations similar to theirs.

With Murray Harcourt you would be working across our client base of some of the UK’s leading organisations with turnover of up to £100m.

The roles:

This year we are offering recruitment training programmes for both Post-Graduates and A-Level School Leavers.

The key focus of these roles will be the undertaking of statutory business audits, working within a team to meet deadlines and deliver exceptional client service.

As a boutique firm within the industry, we differentiate ourselves from the ‘Big 4’ and other larger accountancy practices by offering you the same breadth of work and training but without the exceptionally long hours and anonymity you may receive with other employers. As part of our team, you would have an unrivalled opportunity to have active involvement in all aspects of project delivery and client liaison, exposure to projects you wouldn’t be given in a bigger firm, and the opportunity to work directly with partners across clients of varying industry sectors.

Post-Graduates:                 3 Year ACA Training Contract

Over your three-year training contract, you will study for and sit a number of exams. We pay for all costs of first time sittings included in your training and exams, and will support you as much as you need throughout your studies. We will also provide you with the necessary resources and mentoring to help you develop within the business and gain relevant work experience.

School Leavers:     4-5 Year AAT & ACA Training Contract

Your 4-5-year training contract at Murray Harcourt will involve studying and sitting a number of exams for both AAT and ACA certified qualifications. This is a great opportunity for A-Level School Leavers with a keen aptitude for Maths, communication, and an eye for detail. We cover the costs for all first-time exam sittings included during your studies and will provide you with all the support and resources you will need.

As a smaller firm, every new recruit is viewed as an important team addition so we will invest heavily in your personal and professional development and see you as an integral part of our future. The main focus of your training contract will be with the audit and assurance team, however, on qualification you will have the opportunity to work in any of our service lines.

The candidate:

You don't need a background in accountancy, finance or business to become a Murray Harcourt trained ICAEW Chartered Accountant, but you do need to demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for the topic you've studied and the desire to develop a career in a challenging and competitive industry. Ideally, we are looking for:

Personal qualities/skills:

Technical skills:

  • A 2.1 degree* in any discipline. If the degree is arts-based, you should be able to demonstrate a strong aptitude in Maths. (*This applies to the Post Graduate role only)
  • 300 UCAS points
  • Grade 5 or above for GCSE Mathematics and English.
  • Strong IT skills, with experience in a variety of packages, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint is an advantage.

Communication (oral, electronic, written):

  • Excellent writing/presentation skills.
  • Clear and concise communication and the ability to work with and influence senior management.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Highly professional at all times.

Commitment /Attitude to work:

  • Plenty of initiative and excellent organisation skills.
  • Excellent time management.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Always committed to delivering excellent levels of service.

Other

  • Post Graduate applicants must have a full, clean, driving license and use of their own car. For School Leaver’s to progress to their ACA training contract (after AAT), a driving license and own car will be essential.

At Murray Harcourt, personal characteristics are just as important as qualifications. We are looking to employ candidates with excellent communication, time management and teamwork skills. We want candidates with a desire to embrace and complete all tasks with enthusiasm. We are looking for problem solvers who will look for solutions to client needs and individuals who can demonstrate a willingness to take responsibility and who can show the necessary initiative to lead a project or team.

In return we offer a fun, supportive and stimulating team environment where, uniquely, you can help shape the future of the business and its goals.

We are now recruiting for training courses to start in January 2021. Please download the form from our website here, fill it in and email it to us at careers@murrayharcourt.com. Successful candidates from this phase will be required to attend and pass an interview (this may be done via Zoom or Microsoft Teams), before progressing to the next stage; an assessment centre. Successful candidates will then start their training course in January 2021.
